Distress Call Sail Boat Strikes Norris Rocks

Lost steering, being blown towards Norris Rocks

Radio contact lost

Chrome weather--SE 25, seas 3 ft., cloudy, rising tide.

On scene--S.A.P.

--vessel aground on rocks laying on its side-pounding on the rocks-no people visible

-- sound horn to raise anyone on board

-- no response.

-- Search party ashore with the required equipment

--you find one person in the rocks behind the boat

-- check the boat for safety

-- ok

--one searches the boat for second person -- no one found

- notify the coxswain

-- person possibly in the water.

Exercise (a)

- shore crew treat, package, transfer to the Mapleguard.


- call Comox with SITREP and request second SAR to search

- complete patient recovery and transport to Deep Bay with request for ambulance to meet.

Exercise (b)

-- Comox advises that French Creek 1 has also been dispatched to scene.

-- French Creek on scene

(a) starts search for second person

(b) request F.C. put 2 men aboard Mapleguard to assist in search and FC extract beach crew and patient from beach and depart for Deep Bay.

French Creek returns to assist in search if needed.

Notify Comox of vessel condition and disposition.

(Why change in crews and boats is that FC is better able to get beach party onto a vessel --open over bow -no cabin.)

EXERCISE 2

Comox has received a call from a small vessel broken down at Flores Is. And drifting towards Helliwell Park bluffs.

3 POB---radio contact lost.

Sisters weather conditions--winds SE25-increasing;seas 3 ft.; cloudy.

ON SCENE--boat crashing against bluff, no beaches nearby, 3 people in the water hanging on to boat, no one appears to be wearing life jackets.

SAP--approach and determine how to retrieve--?-with heaving line-

How long in the water-?

ALL on board--medical condition of each--what type of treatments required-

How long will it take to transport-?- where to go to transfer--Ford Cove /

Deep Bay--what are the time line factors--how many ambulances will be needed-?

Time to Ford Cove---transfer---drive across Hornby---Ferry crossing---

Drive across Denman--Ferry crossing... ONE AMBULANCE Hornby is first responders with nurses and doctors -car 1 person..--Denman

EXERCISE 3

Comox receives a phone call from a citizen on Denman Is. of some one calling for help on the beach below their house but unable to get down because of the bluffs. The person says there is an Oyster farm below.

Commence a beach search west edge of Metcalf Bay towards Denman Ferry terminal. Half way to the terminal you see a light flashing on the hill.

(( Inside the 20m mark appr. 49,30.85 N & 124,47.35 W)

On Scene weather; W-calm; S-smooth; heavy rain.

You locate a boat on the beach behind the Oyster lease --on a closer in search you spot a person laying on the beach on some rocks.

Water is deep to shore

SAP--boat up on beach -- engines up--

2 members over the side with first aid kit--

Assessment ABC' ok--pain right side chest and right arm--bright red blood around and coming from mouth

--RBS (Rapid Body Search) --right arm broken--blood ??--

Send over spine board--

Treat, transport, transfer at Fanny Bay -- with paper work..

R.T.B. - refuel - clean up , restock-- Comox--Debrief.

EXERCISE 4 (a)

Comox report of a person has fallen aboard a sail boat at-------and has possible limb fractures.

Wx at Sisters: wind 10 NW, seas calm,

On scene identify vessel at anchor.

SAP- all clear--secure along side-attendant proceeds to patient at bottom of companion way stairs.

History-- person fell head first-- Scene leg caught in steps

--Assessment--ABC ok--RBS --leg broken-- wrist broken--right wrist sprain -- bruises --swelling on head above rt. ear.

Treat--move to extract leg--CAREFUL!!--package--transfer--transport --

Paper work.--

RTB -refuel - clean up - restock - Comox - debrief.

EXERCISE 4 (b)

Comox has received a report of a person burned on a power vessel at ----------------- vessel name ------------------ .

Wx; calm, smooth; visibility. 20; hot..

On scene find vessel at anchor. --SAP clear--secure along side

--attendant proceed to patient and finds victim in the galley--woman with top burned off and 1st. and 2nd. degree burns from mid. line to face and hands.

History -- lit propane stove and it flashed up burning top off, stove shut down.

Treat, transport---transfer -- paper work. (husband going with wife)

Contact JRCC if they would have us tow vessel to nearest secure moorage

Fords Cove as people may not being returning for a unknown time.

RTB -- refuel -- clean up-- restock , Comox , -- Debrief..

EXERCISE 5

Comox has received a report of a vessel on fire--4 POB-- cannot get to the

Boat's tender. All persons have life jackets on.

Wx. --NW 10; clear, seas rippled.

On scene--vessel burning fiercely -- 4 people in the water hanging on to line from the bow, heavy smoke and flames.

Set up to lay down a curtain of fog to protect all from heat and smoke while rescuing persons and protect our vessel as well.

Treat--transport--transfer--paper work.

RTB - refuel --clean up --restock--Debrief.

EXERCISE 6

Lat/Long & 60DST

Set up 6-8 points a the chart (paper) and proceed to locate these on the electronic nav. {Set up a route? - Nelson}

Plot course and time to each point. These can go from one to the other if spaced and scattered far enough apart.

EXERCISE 7

Damage Control

This to get proficient at deploying the TARP

SAP verbal what kind of hull would this vessel have and the problems
